About .hack//G.U.

.hack//G.U. is a three-volume video game series that is part of the .hack multimedia franchise. It is considered to be a major success in the .hack franchise, with Volume 3 of the series becoming the #1 video game in Japan in 2007. .hack//G.U. is part of .hack Conglomerate, a project that encompasses several multimedia productions (.hack//Roots, .hack//G.U., .hack//CELL, .hack//GnU, .hack//Alcor, Online Jack, and .hack//Link) that serve as a sequel to the main .hack project (which includes the original .hack games as well as .hack//SIGN and .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet).

The story is set within the online game known as "The World", although the events that occur in The World also affect what happens in the players' real lives. The G.U. series' story focuses on the PKK (player killer killer) Haseo and his pursuit of a mysterious PK (player killer) called Tri-Edge his friend, Shino, falls into a coma after being attacked by Tri-Edge. Haseo later on learns that there is more to The World than just leveling up and running off on one's own to hunt down a PK, and discovers that there is more to Tri-Edge than just being a PK with the strange ability to render his victims comatose.

Why Haseo?

I have a fondness for characters with dynamic personalities, and I think that Haseo is a good example of such. When I started playing .hack//G.U. Volume 1, I didn't like Haseo that much. I actually went as far as to say that I hated him; his arrogance and his selfishness, coupled with his stupidity, really got on my nerves. As I continued playing the G.U. series, however, I became fond of him as I began to understand him more and more (ah, the wonders of being a teenage boy driven by love, a desire to be the "best"/"strongest", and testosterone...). I also love how he eventually moves away from his arrogant, angsty self and develops better social skills.

...I've also got to hand it to his voice actor in the English version of the games, Yuri Lowenthal, for his terrific voice and amazing voice acting skills. I'm a sucker for characters with nice voices. Haha.
