About Little Red Riding Hood
I'm sure everyone is familiar with the story; a little girl who is known for wearing a red hood is sent off by her mother to bring a basket of goodies to her sick grandmother. Her mother also warns her to stay on the path and/or not to talk to strangers (or something to that effect). As luck would have it, Little Red runs into a wolf along the way, and the wolf tricks her into racing him to her grandmother's house. The wolf gets there first and devours Little Red's grandmother. Little Red arrives moments after, and is tricked into believing that the wolf is her grandmother. The wolf gobbles her up, but Little Red and her grandmother are rescued by a hunter who happened to pass by. The end.
As most fairytales go, however, this isn't the original story. The original story's message is not just about childish disobedience, but deals with young girl's sexual maturation. And the story isn't as pleasant as it is now; the story deals with dark themes like cannibalism and s-- (for a full-blown analysis of the original tale, click here). Various versions of the tale appeared over the years; some with the girl managing to escape the wolf on her own, some wherein she got eaten, some with a hunter rescuing the girl and her grandmother. The most popular versions are probably the ones written by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm (for the transcript of these versions of the tale as well as the original, click here), which were severely altered to suit younger audiences.
